Summery Salute

I had yummy Korean noodles for lunch today with Jamie, who kindly obliged my photo request.  (She was complicit in the early blog days, a longtime blog contributor, really.)  We popped into Zara and H&M for a quick look after (well, it is payday...) and I seriously met mixed emotions....  It was strange to see all the long sleeves, darker colors, and layers, and also the summer sales racks had been pushed all the way to the back.  At the same time...

Fall is coming at us in full force!  Here come the stacked ankle booties, layered jackets, scarves, and delicious textures.  Everything was prominently displayed in the windows, and it looks like the stores are gearing up for one fierce weekend of stocking up for fall.

So, before I switch out sun and sand for autumn leaves, here's one last casual Friday/August look, resurrecting some old closet pieces, including some kate spade heels from S/S 09...

Pajama Dress

Happy Almost Three Day Weekend! Too bad I will have to spend much of my weekend catching up on work... wah wah wah.  Also, tomorrow is a work from home day (my daughter's school is closed and the babysitter budget for the month is gonzo, which means she will be watching 500 movies and playing with her princess dolls while I will be wearing headphones and attempting to bill as many hours as possible while taking breaks to feed and occasionally snuggle her), so it will kinda sorta feel like a four day weekend. With tons of work and not enough play.

In clothing news, I am wearing this dress that is 100% as comfortable as wearing pajamas. I love it so.

Dress: Zara (similar) (and another awesome option on sale which I LOVE here)

Last Call for Summer/White/Casual/Basically Everything I Like

As I write this, it hits me.

Today is the last day of casual August.

Tomorrow is casual Friday, which preempts casual August.  Or... something like that.  It doesn't count.  You know what I mean.  In other fashion rules, today is the last day you can wear white like you don't care.  So I'll double up with clutch and shoes!

Also, this random street missive was adorable.  Hi, Mary and Dylan!

Pants on a Wednesday

Some days (like today), I start a post and just think "seriously isn't there anything more interesting to say than to talk about my clothes?" And then I realize this is, in fact, a blog about my clothes and maybe that's actually why anyone reads it. I guess it's just that sometimes I don't have anything particularly interesting to say about my clothes. Like today, when this is all I could come up with:
Today is Wednesday and I am wearing pants.
I should also note that Karen and I had a cute feature planned for today that I forgot about and thus did not wear the outfit I was supposed to. Stay tuned for that next Wednesday!

Blue on Blue

As someone who proclaims her love of mixing colors from the rooftops, I surprise myself when I choose a totally monochrome outfit. But today was one of those days where I just needed to get out the damn door already. So all blue it is.

Manic Monday.  Client lunch.  Meetings cancelled.  Coffee with co-workers.  Discovery due.  Receiving preposterous letters from opposing counsel.  Typing back angry responses.  Calming down.  You know, the usual.

The Gap currently has a bunch of loose-fit perfect t-shirts, and I snatched one up this weekend in black and white stripe.  I want to wear it with everything, like jeans, shorts, and this professional-in-a-pinch red skirt.  Something about stripes, red, and black always makes me feel Parisian.  I know Paloma feels the same way.  (The "mime" outfit, I believe?  Here I am miming like I'm not stressed out.)

Leopard Heels 4-Eva

I bought this shirt to wear untucked with skinny jeans on the weekends, but love how it looks tucked into a pencil skirt - sweet!

Also, these leopard heels are on their last days... they are quite literally falling apart at the seams.  And it took me so long to find leopard heels that fit the bill so I'm pretty upset that now I have to begin the search anew.  Here's hoping that some ebay stalking will turn up this exact pair. Fingers crossed!

Purple and Red

We both wore purple and red today!  Freak thing!  We love it when this happens!

Paloma says...

Purple skirt and red shoes? Not sure if I am making it work, but I will say that I like it! And isn't that all that really matters?  Well, that and making sure I am dressed appropriately for work.  Seriously though, if you have read this blog for even a short time, you should know that I really love unusual color combinations, I think that might be my #1 favorite way to pizazz up boring work wear.

Also check out a few ways I've worn this purple skirt in the past... strangely enough, it's quite the workhorse in my closet!

Karen says...

Once again, I have the "less profesh" version of Paloma's concept.  A entire dressed-down redo, in fact, of her third outfit above.  I find it to be randomly wonderful whenever Paloma and I wear the same thing!

A Lil Less Profesh

... Paloma is killing it today, and here I am in a long romper!  In my defense: casual August.

I have this same item in both black and white.  White is totally NSFW.  Black just looks like you're wearing a long dress, which people, um, totally do around here.  And I had on a longer shell for most of the day.

Matched with a new $14.95 H&M necklace.  I was all black and tan today!

Romper/Jumpsuit: Urban Outfitters (nearly identical here)
Necklace: H&M
Wedges (eh, not pictured): Dolce Vita Jonee

It's a tilt your head kinda day.

Instant Professional

Another morning spent in court means another day in classic Lawyer Wear.  Topped this with the matching blazer = black and white, instant professional. But of course I had to add a loud color in there somewhere!
In other news, the lovely Gina over at On the Daily Express asked Karen and I to participate in her "coffee date" feature where we answer some fun questions about ourselves and reminisce about starting this here blog nearly two years (!!) ago - pop over there and check it out here.  And stay over there and check out more of her blog, its one of our faves! :)

Gold Detail

Nothing exciting to report today. Trudging through work all day and looking forward to Cardio Barre tonight - I need it!
In some fun news, hop on over to the adorable blog, Something Good, where Karen and I were both featured this week, talking about work wardrobes and what passes for 'work appropriate' in our industry.  It's really a great weekly feature that Dana does! Check out my feature here, and Karen's here. And thanks, Dana! :)

Summer, Don't Go

Labor Day is creeping upon us, and while many of my friends are already talking about cooler weather, fall fashions, and the crisp autumn air, I'm like... oh HELL no!  I'm all about summer.  I like warm weather, denim shorts with everything, a nice neutral wedge, and never having to worry about jackets and cardigans.

This outfit is an ode to summer, if ever there was one.  White and white and white and then a little bit of pink.  It's actually a pink lace-back $6.95 H&M dress, NSFW, so I threw on my favorite J.Crew Charley sweater in white, which I have been, literally, wearing like it's going out of style.  I also love my new H&M white heels.  Yes, I have another pair of white Kurt Geiger heels, but there is something so freakin' useful about a simple pair of white pumps.  And then, to break it all up, another J.Crew Factory statement necklace.

My sister took this photo.  We had a lovely dinner at The Factory Kitchen in the Arts District.

Easy Peasy (plus my beloved new tote)

Now, I don't normally pose with my handbag when taking selfies in my office because....well, I think it looks silly to carry a bag whilst standing in my office. Maybe I am overthinking?  Anyway, today I broke that rule because THIS arrived in the mail this weekend and was waiting for me in my office when I came in this morning.  So I couldn't very well NOT pose with it!  I have coveted this tote forever, and while in Oakland with Maggie last weekend I was lusting over hers (she's lucky I didn't steal it, frankly), and finally decided to just go ahead and buy the damn bag.  Thanks, in part, to major encouragement from Mags.
I think if you have been thinking about a bag for a year or two, its probably safe to say you really do want it and should have it. Right?

Shirt: Forever 21 (similar-ish)
Skirt: The Limited (similar)

Otherwise, a very uneventful outfit today.  Had a blazer over this for court in the morning. Easy peasy.

So I realized that my Casual Friday outfits these last two weeks have been pretty formulaic - basic tee + skinny jeans + drapey black cardigan + fun shoes.  Sure, maybe I'm ho-hum, but I say if it ain't broke!
Also, I got these shoes last Friday during my lunchtime shopping excursion at Zara with Karen - they were the only pair in the store, were my size, and were marked down from $90 to $15.  In other words, they were meant to be.

Surprise Cute

It's been a whirlwind day and I have to pop out early to go to an ice cream social at my daughter's elementary school (holy crap how do I have a child in elementary school already?!).  However, I had to at least do a quick outfit post because this was one of those outfits that seemed totally boring when I threw it on this morning in a rush but that by day's end I realized was really quite cute. Love when that happens!

Blogger Late Than Never

Can't believe it's already Thursday, and can't believe it took me until Thursday to post something.  Once again, I dressed every day this week with posting in mind, but the days (and willing photographers) just got away from me.

After missing each other all week (as in, not seeing each other as we usually do, not pining for one another), co-workers and I decided to do Fun Lunch.  We took the train to Grand Central Market and sorta overdid it.  We had barbecue, pastrami, and Thai food... then rolled our roly-poly selves back into the office.  This is a post-lunch pic, so you can bet I'm holding my breath a little.  Eek.

This outfit also doubled as depo chic, this morning with a jacket on I took a blink-and-you'll-miss-it one-hour deposition.  Oh, and new black shoes selected by my beloved Paloma from our Zara trip last week.

After a two-day blogging hiatus so I could go to my sister's wedding in Oakland (an unbelievably lovely affair, it was magical - honestly!), and spend long leisurely mornings drinking coffee with Maggie and rubbing her cute preggo belly, I am back in business with work wear as usual.  And totally stepping out of my comfort zone by wearing flats!  Although I absolutely love flats and how they look on other lovely ladies (I'm looking at you, Fran!), I always feel like they look off on me somehow.  But this dress is a titch too short to wear with heels (all dresses need to come in "tall" sizes too, right?!), so flats are the only option really.
Ok, now after that rambling first paragraph, I am pleased to report that I actually really like this whole look once I saw it in photograph! Maybe I can hop on this flats-wearing bandwagon for good!

Dress: J.Crew (LOVE this similar option) (another) (and another - I found so many great alternatives! Apparently striped dresses are where it's at!)

The Best Days

... are Fridays.  And the best weeks are when you get to see your blogging buddy twice in the same.

Jeans: Sold Design Lab Soho (these, and here in regular)
Top: Anthropologie (mine is Swiss dot, but here is a similar in ikat!)
Shoes: Nine West (on sale here)
Clutch: Clare Vivier
Leather Bracelet: found at Oakwood Drive in Manhattan Village

Karen says...

What a great opportunity to meet up today, with Paloma visiting the Zara close to my office for some possible last-minute looks before her weekend wedding trip.  By the looks of it, we have the Friday jeans-and-fun-shoes look down pat.

The best thing about these jeans is that they're distressed.  I love me a white jean, but for a while have been hunting for the look with a tear or two.  I've never owned a pair by Sold Design Lab, but well, not only are they affordable (relatively speaking) and flattering, their sizes run big, so I had to buy a size that I haven't realistically worn in several years.  That's always nice, huh?

I should do a close-up sometime of the leather bracelet - I love it to pieces.  Gold chains and leather, how can you go wrong with that?  (Well, you can.)  But since I'm not great with jewelry, it adds just the right amount of sophisticated edge.

Cardigan: random brand from Nordstrom Rack (similar)
Tee: Target (similar)
Jeans: Gap
Shoes: Jessica Simpson (similar)

Paloma says...

Kept it simple today in jeans and a tee, but of course had to add leopard heels to give it oomph.  Was the perfect outfit for shopping with the best shopping buddy ever at the epic new Zara in DTLA which amazingly I had not been to before today!

Spending a long weekend in The Bay with my two year old (and my Mags!) to attend my sister's wedding (while my older daughter stays behind to start kindergarten on Monday!...sniff!!...), so I am looking forward to some NorCal cool breezes, leisurely days, and living in my Swedish Hasbeens and my new Zara jeans. Happy weekend indeed!

Black, Blue, and Camel too

Dressed in two tried-and-true pieces today - first, one of my beloved Portofino shirts (best shirt ever), and second, one of my beloved Halogen skirts (best skirt ever).  Gotta love wearing comfortable basics with totally uncomfortable and sassy shoes!
Shirt: Express
Skirt: Halogen
Shoes: Sole Society (alternative)

Stripes Forevah!

Man, I really do love stripes.  But I hardly think I'm alone in this, as the stripes trend seems to have dominated stores for the past five years.  Good thing, since they now make up half of my closet.
This striped shirt perplexes me though - I think because it's got two different sets of stripes, with four different colors.  I just never know what to pair it with other than black or gray bottoms.  Ho-hum.  Tried to spice it up with a turquoise ring and earrings, but the picture doesn't quite capture them.  The ring is a vintage piece from the 70's that used to be my mom's - wish I had snapped a close-up!

Sweater: The Limited (similar) (and a cute alternative - love the anchor!)

Business Lunch

OK so maybe it was more of a personal lunch than a business lunch, but the important thing is that we lunched together!  Always makes a day a bit brighter when we get to sit face to face and chat.

Top: Stitch Fix (similar)
Skirt: Halogen (of course, I am telling you I am obsessed with this skirt)
Shoes: Banana Republic (similar-ish, but with a buckle - love!)
Bag: Coach (not the same, but I want this bag)

Paloma says...

Was so lovely to sit across from Karen in a booth and discuss life, work, and blogging.  And as I said during lunch, I am getting very burned out on pictures of me behind my office door, so it is just icing on the cake that we also get great blog pictures out of our lunch date!

Sweater: J.Crew Factory Charley
(which is on sale in every color, and I have navy and white)
Skirt: Madewell (similar)
Sunglasses: from Clover Silver Lake (an overpriced version here)
Shoes: DV by Dolce Vita
Necklace: Madewell (similar)
Purse: Vintage Coach Classic City
(non-vintage version here)

Karen says....

I've already detected a problem with casual August.  Too much variety every morning.  This morning, I just went for whatever was around, which happened to be all these summery items sitting on a nearby ottoman.  Take that Charley sweater, for instance.  I can't resist its lightweight wear and basically wear it all the time now.  Totally helps that it's $20.

I yanked this skirt down a couple more inches once I made it back to the office.  But while at lunch, I soaked in summer as best as I could.

A Denim Story

I have this fear of denim on denim, borne from Justin and Britney at that one VMA's from the 2000's, and from terms like "Canadian tuxedo."  But when Katie Holmes rocked chambray on denim on this month's Glamour like a boss, I was determined to put these pieces together myself.

I intended my coral heels, rather than the hunter green, since it's summer and all, but sigh, just couldn't find them this morning.  So here we are.

Shirt: J.Crew (an oldie, so here's something similar)
Heels: Vince Camuto (similar)

Things I Love

If there are two (clothing-related) things that I love, its stripes and a pop of color (hello, Brad Goreski much?). Oh, and also pencil skirts. And stretchy fabric.
I think its safe to say today's outfit is a win.

Skirt: The Limited (similar)
Shoes: Enzo Angiolini (similar)

Color Casual

It's the first day of August - which means it is the first day of casual August!  The only thing I like better than casual August here at the firm is casual December!

Our firm has a program where you're permitted go casual in August with a donation to the Boys & Girls Club.  So, for the days that I do not have a meeting, I can go as business casual as I want (provided I pay $5 [or something like that]).

This happened to also be casual Friday, with several different happy hours all taking place for various occasions.  At the point I recorded this outfit, I had dispensed with the business casual-friendly cardigan.

This was another J.Crew Factory find, a three-in-one dress that is tube dress, mini dress, and midi skirt all in one.  Here is tube dress mode with another J.Crew Factory necklace.

Dress: J.Crew Factory
Necklace: J.Crew Factory
