Falling Back

Paloma says...

...on old standbys.  Black, grey, and red.  This is how I do when I am swamped.

In other news, these pants are soooo comfy but that's probably because they are WAY too big. And thus, not so flattering. Some days, however, comfort is the most important thing.

Glamour and Paperwork

Paloma says...

Feeling very polished in this ensemble, even a little bit glamorous.  And wishing I could be in nearly-100% J.Crew every day.

Shirt: J.Crew
Skirt: J.Crew
Necklace: J.Crew

Inside/Outside, Office Edition

Karen says...

Big sigh.  I wore a number of outfits in the last two weeks with the intention of posting.  But alas, the busy work days swallowed me whole.  It's a little weird, too, asking your boss or your client to wait a minute while you selfie your outfit.

My co-workers and I went for day two of pastrami heaven at the Ugly Drum pop-up at Mendocino Farms.  I guess that's a plug.  My pal is one half of the Ugly Drum duo, so we had gone yesterday on their limited engagement, and today we hauled our other co-worker over.  OH: "It's like Bludso's and Langer's had a love child."  A happy meal, all around.

After lunch, I implored my co-workers to take a blog photo for me.  They looked at each other with the weight of unwanted responsibility.  Then Vi punted to Steve, "I'm sick, I can't."  Steve didn't look like he believed her, and then lazily snapped a series of unusable shots.  Anyway, I found one from the pack and then completed the set here in my office, for a compendium of the inside/outside office looks.

I know they mean well, and want to help.  But that is why I miss Paloma.

And It Continues...

Paloma says...

...WORK, WORK, WORK. Blah, blah, blah. You've heard it all before.

Here is what I wore whilst chained to my desk today....(a quintessential Paloma one, all my go-to brands in one!)

Shirt: Old Navy
Cardigan: LOFT
Skirt: The Limited
Shoes: Jessica Simpson
Earrings: borrowed from my mom
[and eventually kept for good (fun fact - they were my 'something old' at my wedding!)]

Alive and Kicking

Paloma says...

We still exist, I swear! Just slacking in the blogging department a bit.  Yesterday I was way out in the IE (the "inland empire" - California-speak for the expanse of land east of LA and west of Nevada) conducting witness interviews and just didn't have time to swing a photo.

Today I am chained to my desk drafting, drafting, drafting... reports, motions, agreements, you name it. And once again, wearing my stripe/leopard combo! In fact, this outfit is very close to identical to the one I sported just last week, only this time with jeans! Thank you, Friday.

Tee: Forever 21
Cardigan: Martin + Osa (R.I.P.)
Jeans: LOFT
Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Double Fashionistas

Paloma says...

So I fell off the map the last two days. Work has been busy as all get-out, not surprisingly.  But I swear I wore clothes. In fact, yesterday I wore this same shirt, but since I was working out of the office and I didn't blog it, it didn't really happen, right??

FIRST: hop on over the On the Daily EXPRESS (a new blog fave of ours!) to check out a cool post on work wear featuring lil' old us! We were so flattered to be featured and I might have to buy all of the Express items I picked out.

In fact, today I did wear my fave Express pants, possibly inspired by that post.  Did things a bit differently today and had the hubs snap my picture as I was leaving for work in the morning.  Of course, my darling youngest daughter had to hop into the pic and show off her own fashion savvy! (and her bedhead hair!)

On me:
Shirt: Target (similar)
Sweater: The Limited (similar)
Pants: Express (similar)
Shoes: Jones New York

On my baby girl:
Shirt: Zara
Pants: Childrens Place

Navy All The Time

Karen says...

Missed my Friday outfit and decided to start the week with a little more polish.  But on a budget.  I've cut back a lot of the extra spending lately, so places like Heavenly Couture are a godsend.  I mean, everything is $16!  (Or, um, or $18, it would appear.)  It definitely requires a bit of hunt and edit, and it's not like you'll find cashmere on the racks.  But I have definitely found a couple of jackets and wraps that are assets to my closet.

I've been on a navy kick lately, and this entire outfit is navy, and from Heavenly Couture.  Including the necklace.  I didn't mean to put them together, but out of haste this morning, I did it... and it worked out.

Dress, Wrap, Necklace: Heavenly Couture

A black button down in a breezy fabric, jeans that fit like a dream, and leopard shoes. Does it get any better? I think not.

Happy Friday!

Paloma's April 2014 Purchases

Paloma says...

So I am working from home today, which means my outfit is sweatpants. Not interesting.
Instead, I thought I would do a post showing what I bought this month.  I always love these posts on other blogs, because I love to see how people stretch their buck and build their wardrobes.  Also, I think its a good way to hold myself accountable as to where the $$ goes!

BTW, I really meant to do this at the end of the month, but since I have no outfit to post today, and since I have told myself NO MORE SHOPPING for the month, I'm doing this a bit early.

April 2014 Purchases

So, clearly this month I went for BASICS.
Gap Essential tanks - I needed basic camisoles that I could wear under cardigans and also on the weekend sans sweater. These fit the bill perfectly.  Plus, I got them on sale! {originally $15.00 each/bought with promo code for $11.50 each}
Ann Taylor Windowpane Slim Ankle Pants - I've been wanting printed pants for awhile now and I love the windowpane print.  I haven't tried these on yet (bought online) so I have my fingers crossed they will fit perfectly! {originally $89.00/bought with promo code for $47.99}
Gap classic ballet flats - How these didn't enter my wardrobe earlier in my life is insane. Perfect. Shoe.  {originally $39.95/bought with promo code for $27.95}

Nine West Flax pumps (via ebay!) - a good pair of black pumps is clearly a MUST in my profession.  I wear them to death.  So much so that I plow through a pair every year.  This is my newest pair and I was pumped to find them at a deep discount on ebay - and brand new, too! {$75.00 new/bought on ebay for $42.00!}
J.Crew Ruched Wrap Tank (I actually got this in black) - I have needed a good classic black bathing suit for just about forever.  Since a mini vacation to Palm Springs is in my near future, now was the time! And I even bought it full price! gasp. However, J.Crew swimsuits last forever, as I still have ones from high school in perfect condition.  I just don't wear them since my body is no longer in perfect condition and they are itty bitty.  {$89.00}
Total spent in April - $229.94 {this is actually WAY more than I usually spend per month, actually. But I also rarely buy a $90 swimsuit, sometimes you've just gotta splurge!}

Pop of Pink

Karen says...

All monochromatic today, a perfect occasion to accent with some pink heels.  Also, experimenting with lace plus patterns.  You know, at a farmers market stuffed in the courtyard of an office park.

Shirt: Banana Republic
Skirt: Joie
Cardigan: Charlotte Tarantola
Shoes: Steve Madden

In Between

Karen says...

It's Wednesday, and the 60-ish weather has turned me off to skirts, so here's a middle of the road outfit for the middle of the week.

Shirt: Maison Scotch
Sweater: Tris
Pants: alice + olivia
Shoes: Sole Society
Necklace: Forever 21

No End in Sight

Paloma says...

Sometimes being a lawyer is just downright hard. And frustrating. Today was one of those days. For reasons that are far from interesting to anyone, the mountain of work not only will continue, but it will quadruple. Look forward to plenty more "meh" posts from me for the next few weeks. Ha!

On to the outfit - I wore this to court this morning, just added a jacket that matched the skirt. I think I've worn nearly an identical outfit before on this blog. But for good reason - polka dots + pencil skirt = easy chic!

Shirt: Urban Outfitters (similar-ish)
Skirt: The Limited (similar)
Shoes: Nine West

The End is Near

The mountain of work I have been under for the past month or so should be easing off as of tomorrow afternoon and it CAN NOT COME SOON ENOUGH.

Continue to feel uninspired in the clothing department - opting for comfort over all else. Fortunately this pencil skirt basically feels like pajamas.

Cardigan: J.Crew (really old) (similar)
Tank: Gap
Skirt: The Limited (similar)

Karen says...

I do not normally stand around with my eyes closed, but the best shot I got today caught me blinking.

Leslie Knope, of Parks and Recreation fame, wore a burgundy-red shirt-cardy combo on the episode I watched last night.  So I gave it a go, and I like it.

Nothing to See Here

Paloma says...

Bogged down yet again and feeling a real lack of creativity.  Hence the snooze-worthy (and not particularly flattering) outfit.  This might as well be pajamas!  The shirt is actually navy but you can barely tell.  And the shoes were a recent purchase inspired by Fran!

Friday Foto

Karen says...

Ready to come in on this Friday and crank out a bunch of work and then move on to my social life.  Thus, I decided to skip a step and just dress for my social life, which is happening right... about... now!

T-shirt (not visible): Maison Scotch
Denim shirt: H&M
Skort: Tris
Boots: Vince Camuto

And if you look reeeally closely, you'll catch a couple of bonus co-workers in the reflection...

Missing my pal Paloma!  Where are you, darling girl?

No Time

Paloma says...

No time to say anything cute. But that's OK, you only came for the outfit anyway....(though honestly it's not too special either...)

Sweater: H&M
Tee: Target
Skirt: The Limited
Shoes: Jones New York (via eBay)

Afterschool Snack

Karen says...

And by "school," I mean, "court."  Ran into a friend in court this morning, a coincidence which called for breakfast after business.  Off to the Arts District we went for The Pie Hole.  Here's a post-pie pic.

Blouse: Zara
Skirt: Forever 21
Shoes: Sole Society
Bag: Vintage Coach

If some emergency presented itself and someone shouted, "Quick!  Grab four things in your closet that you absolutely love right now!" I daresay that these items will make the cut.

Casual Profesh

Karen says...

It's kinda sweltering this week and I'm in no mood for a suit!  Decided to meet a client today in a casual-professional hybrid.  Since I can't ask the client to take a picture of me, me and bedroom mirror, it is.

Two-tiered blouse: H&M
Pants: J.Crew Factory
Shoes: Sole Society
Necklace: my friend Cynthia

Pattern Power!

Paloma says...

OK, so if you are a parent of a child between the ages of 2 and 6, you probably know the title of this post is not exactly original, but is in fact courtesy of Team Umizoomi.  There was just no other way I could think of to describe the awesomeness of wearing stripes and leopard in the same outfit.

I'm honestly not sure if I'm pulling it off, but I love the idea!

Cardigan:  J.Crew
Tee: Forever 21 (spikey shoulder version!)
Skirt: The Limited (similar)
Shoes: Jessica Simpson "Minna" wedge (similar but not a wedge)
Earrings: The Oxford Trunk

Basic Blocking

Karen says...

Like Paloma, I did a little outfit preplanning yesterday and thought about the colors I wanted to wear.  I knew it had to be clean and professional, since I had a couple of different meetings today.  And for no apparent reason my mind decided: grey, white, and black.

Ended up resurrecting a very old Theory dress from a few years back.  Sometimes, I'm just grateful if it fits.

Dress: Theory
Jacket: Zara
Shoes: Michael Kors
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

A little parking structure timer cam selfie today - last task of the day.  (Yeah, I wish!)

Color Dreaming

Paloma says...

I am such a dork. I literally was laying in bed last night, trying to fall asleep, and envisioning how I would wear this beloved (albeit wrinkly!) purple skirt today. I was thinking of a simple black top, maybe a peplum sleeveless (it's 90 degrees in L.A. today, y'all!), or perhaps a white blouse... and then suddenly it hit me: YELLOW!

Haha, so dramatic.  No, but seriously, yellow and purple are on the opposite sides of the color wheel, so if I remember my elementary school art class correctly, that means the combination is particularly striking.  Er.... or maybe it's that they really clash?  Either way, I like it.

Blouse: LOFT (similar in polka dot)
Skirt: J.Crew Factory (similar in a pretty plum)
Cardigan: The Limited (similar)
Earrings: Mod Cloth (similar)
Shoes: Nine West (similar)

In other news, go check out MK at Outfit Posts all this week to see how she interprets some of the looks from our blog! (And with the exact same pieces, in many cases, since I bought said pieces after seeing them on her blog!)

Hello? Here I Am!

Karen says...

Uhh, yeah, so I haven't been posting.  Lately, I am the perfect example of feeling ick at work, just a little run-down and not-so-cute.  Obviously a good outfit is supposed to cure you from the work doldrums.  With that in mind, I'm getting back in the game!

Shirt: Halogen / Skirt: Halogen / Shoes: Michael Kors

This is a new skirt I've been wanting to blog, but haven't figured out how to style it with more than a white shirt.  Very much had to have it after seeing the pattern, reminiscent of structured kimonos, without entirely knowing how it would look best.  We'll see how I can play around with it.  This outfit is apparently 67% Nordstrom.

And I spent the past weekend glamping, so although it is not work-related, here are two looks that still did occur between 9:30 to 5:00.  I'm post-cramming here!

Tanks: Forever 21 / Jacket: Forever 21 / Leggings: James Perse / Socks: Hue / Sneaks: Topshop
Sunglasses: Vintage Christian Dior / Purse: Vintage Coach

Early in the day at El Capitan Canyon, I put together an outfit to make the loooong trek down the hill, and up the hill, to breakfast at the one and only cafe for twenty miles.

Later, that same day...

Headband: Urban Outfitters

I ditched the socks as the weather warmed up, and we wound up in Solvang.  At this point, the pop of red was most necessary.  Solvang sucks, by the way.

Power Suited

Paloma says...

Shout out again to MK at the Outfit Posts blog for featuring our little blog on her own ALL WEEK! So flattering. Especially from someone with a fashion sense we have long admired. :)  Can't wait to see your interpretations of our outfits!

Today I am boring in a suit - had a court appearance this morning and meeting with a witness this afternoon so left the suit on even though usually I ditch the jacket in favor of a cardigan or something.  Feeling all the more powerful today because of it. OK, not really.

T-Shirt: The Limited (same but scoop neck) / Suit: The Limited (jacket) (skirt)
Shoes: Nine West / Necklace: Target

Another note on suits - before I became a lawyer, I always assumed that suits were worn one way only - with a button-down blouse underneath.  Basically, like a guy.  The truth is, us ladies are far luckier than the boys because we can wear our suits with just about anything  underneath. I mean, obvs I am not suggesting you wear only a lacy bralette under your jacket (though Zoe Hart totally would - but she also wears stilettos and short-shorts to work as a doctor), but a comfy tee? Absolutely. Today I've got this great one from The Limited, which is super soft, super comfy, and in a great color.

Paloma says...

I feel like I want to replace all my shoes with flats. I am a high heels gal all the way, but I gotta tell ya, wearing flats a few days in a row is very relieving on my tootsies. And makes walking to/from my car hauling 17 bags a hell of a lot easier.

Now I guess I just have to buy some new shoes. Darn.

Cardigan: The Limited / Shirt: LOFT / Black Jeans (cuffed): J.Crew Matchstick
Flats: Target / Pendant: Forever 21

Single White Female

Paloma says...

I am totally blog-stalking Franish.  She wore a striped pencil skirt with a blue top and cognac flats on Tuesday and so I did the same thing today (sorta).  Although she looked about 40 times better.
AND I might have to copy her again and buy those flats she is sporting.

AND I look like a weirdo today, as I am unnecessarily squinting but had about 3 minutes to take a pic and blog so this is what you get.

The End.

Sweater: J.Crew / Skirt: The Limited / Shoes: Target / Necklace: The Limited

Rut or Formula?

Paloma says...

OK, so my obsession with black/white/gray/stripes paired with a pop of red apparently runs deep.  I reach for this combo consistently and without even thinking about it.  Some might call it a rut, but I'm going to call it my formula for fashion success. That sounds good, right? ;)

Shirt: J.Crew Factory (similar) / Pants: The Limited / Scarf: {Not sure, it was a gift} (similar)
Shoes: Banana Republic / Earrings: J.Crew Factory

{P.S. What is going on with my eyes in this pic - I look like a crazed woman!?}

Looking Like I Feel

Paloma says...

Yup, I look as bedraggled as I feel.  Wanna see what I am wearing anyway?

Shirt: Old Navy / Sweater: Banana Republic / Pants: Gap / Belt (its silver/gold): Target / Shoes: Nine West

In other news, I just placed an order for some stuff from Conversation Pieces -- its an online shop that I discovered through Audrey over at Putting Me Together, and I am very excited to get my new duds. The stuff I got is very much weekend wear, and not so much work wear, but maybe I will try to sneak them onto the blog somehow. :)

PS: Just saw Conversation Pieces opened a boutique in Long Beach. I might have to make a special trip to the LBC just for that.
