A Friday Kind of Wednesday

A workday before the four-day weekend... absolutely the best work environment, ever.  Peace and quiet to get things done, everybody in high spirits excited about food and friends and family and Friday... for us, Black Friday came early with a little Wednesday web window shopping...

Shirt: GAP / Jacket: H&M / Skirt: Madewell / Necklace: Libby of London
Shoes: Classiques Entier / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Karen says...

A whirlwind of a workday with a meeting in the morning and an office stop to get things sent and filed.  No time for a photo until it was time for dinner and a movie with a friend.  Here I am on Sawtelle, with this outfit having taken me through many holiday eve adventures.

I hope to partake in every movie marathon I can this weekend!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Shirt: Urban Outfitters / Cardigan: Martin + Osa / Jeans: Red Engine / Shoes: Target

Paloma says...

Happy almost Turkey Day!  It's a ghost town around the office today.  Most people took the day off, and those that didn't checked out early.  I am on my way out the door, myself (it's 4:00 pm so it's a bit early), and looking forward to four days of pajamas and relaxing.  And turkey.  Ahhhh.

Falling Behind

Another month to go to make it a full year - we can do this!

Dress: Zara / Sweater: Express / Belt: Target / Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Paloma says...

Boy oh boy have we been sucking at blogging lately.  I think with the craziness of life and work these days, blogging has just fallen by the wayside unfortunately.  Also, since Karen and I no longer work in side by side offices in the same firm, which means no more popping in and out of each other's offices all day, chatting about this or that, it becomes too easy to forget about our little pet project.  It's also been almost a whole year at this (!), so I think maybe the excitement we once had for it is waning?  Anyway, our hope is to reinvigorate the blog in 2014, maybe revamp it a bit and change direction - make it a bit more creative and a bit less of a place to dump pictures of each and every outfit, no matter how mundane. We shall see.

In the meantime, here I am in another 30 for 30 piece!  Sheesh.  But no amount of wearing this dress will ever make me tire of it.  It's just so comfortable, lovely, and versatile.  Too bad this picture doesn't capture the gorgeous emerald color adequately.

Shirt: Urban Outfitters / Skirt: Forever 21 / Shoes: Vince Camuto / Jacket (not pictured): Theory
Necklace: Bedford Ave. street vendor (Brooklyn)

Karen says...

How is a girl to blog when she has cases to mediate?  One such meeting took place yesterday at the Wilshire Country Club, of all things.  Here I am sneaking in a photo between back and forth negotiations.

The dim lighting here cannot capture my new hunter green shoes.  The outfit itself seems to be another variation of a 30 for 30 goody (see supra), but that has to be expected.  I mean, we picked our favorite pieces for those thirty days... unavoidable to recreate these looks...

Short Week, Yes!

Hooray for short work weeks!  But boo for sick days, which Paloma is taking today.

Shirt: Anthropologie / Dress: Vintage Etoile Isabel Marant / Jacket: Heavenly Couture
Socks: whatever / Boots: Zara

Karen says...

Just trynna get ish done in the office before the holiday, woot!  That means sneaking in a bit of business casual on a Monday.  Yes, this is a loose, secondhand Isabel Marant shirt dress; but yes, I have dolled it up businesslike with the shirt underneath and the jacket over it.  I was very productive in this comfortable outfit.

Fitted in Florals, Fitted in Stripes

The stars align and we're both in the office in our fitted Friday faves!

Shirt: Chaser / Jeans; Current/Elliot / Shoes: Vince Camuto

Karen says...

Excuse the weirdo lighting, it was way dark in this hallway where we snuck a photo in, and I had to use the Dickens out of one of my app filters... "Clyde" from Picstitch, in fact.  Anyway, this was a very floral outfit in dark, muted tones.  The jeans look like wallpaper - which I frickin' love - and are another harvest from the maje sample sale of last Friday.  I also got hunter green heels, finally, which I can't wait to wear with all kinds of different combinations.  And the rest is just a comfy racerback tank.  Of course, it is rainy and chilly outside, so all the outfit is missing are my trusty infinity scarf and coat.

And now, back outside I go.  Happiest of Fridays!

Shirt: J.Crew Factory / Pants: Forever 21 / Boots: Steve Madden / Necklace: Forever 21

Paloma says...

I love this outfit.  It's actually one I've been wearing on the weekends pretty frequently.  These pants are seriously so comfortable, it's crazy.  They are stretchy and feel like I'm wearing pajamas.  Too bad they are a weird in-between shade (are they black or navy?!).  But fortunately, black and navy both work just fine with gray and stripes.  And cognac.  All favorites.

Happy Friday before a short week!  Huzzah!!

Rainy Days and Thursdays

Whoa, where did the rain come from?  Time to bring out the heavy artillery.  Which can mean a cape or some sweats, depending on the occasion.

Sweater: Forever 21 / Jeans: Gap / Shoes: Converse / Earrings: Oxford Trunk

Paloma says...

Working from home today!  But since I had to attend a Thanksgiving luncheon at my daughter's preschool, I actually had to get dressed, too.  It's a rainy gray day which I love.  Perfect day to work from home.  And the perfect day to wear a cozy gray sweater and my comfiest jeans.  Currently not wearing the sneakers pictured here, but have instead traded them in for slippers.  I seriously feel more productive than ever.

Cape: Vintage Spiewak / Camisole: Martin + Osa / Shirt: Heavenly Couture / Skirt: J.Crew
Tights: Hue / Shoes: Michael Kors / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Karen says...

I have been wanting and waiting to wear this Beacon's Closet find since my trip to New York in September.  I had never heard of Spiewak, which happens to specialize in security uniforms!  But the joy of vintage shopping on the East coast is finding all these delightful coats and capes that you would never find here, for lack of stock and less variety.  At a fraction of the price, of course.

And, the joy of the rainy day is being able to wear capes, just enough for the 65-degree weather.  Of course, I still see people outside in t-shirts.  Angelenos don't understand weather, so they oftentimes just ignore it.

And of course, giving some face time to my new Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B., which Paloma and I are both huge fans of and which is pretty much the perfect everyday work accessory.

Single Lady

Single ladies are doing it for themselves!  Blogging, that is.  Paloma is having a nutso day, so Karen goes it on her own.  We miss Paloma!  We want Paloma!

Dress: Joie / Belt: Cole Haan / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini / Necklace: Scotch & Soda

Karen says...

Woot!  Lots of color today.  Methinks it's time for a new pair of blue suede shoes.  These lovelies have served me well in the last two years, and I love them to death, so it's time to bring another pair into the rotation before I wear these out.

The dress is another find from the sample sale.  So much of what I find there are impulse buys, because you have a limited opportunity to pile a bunch of crap in your arms, bring it back to a slipshod changing area held up by bedsheets doubling as makeshift doors, frantically slip in and out of the different articles of clothing while angling your way into a sliver of a mirror to see if it will work - with about forty other ladies crowding around you, in the same melee.  Given this careful, methodical process of decison-making, one ends up buying whatever and hoping later it's a win.

This dress?  It's a win!

Embracing Fall

Looking our autumnal best.

Collared Shirt: H&M / Shirt: BCBG / Jacket: Zara / Pants: Just U.S.A. / Boots: Zara

Karen says...

I am loving this collared shirt, sweater, and jacket look, and I wish I had enough separates to make it my daily uniform.  In this case, it's not quite a sweater but a sort of sweatshirt-like short-sleeved top I fell in love with at BCBG a few years back.  Of course, we love when old finds can be used in new ways.

Shirt: Forever 21 / Cardigan: LOFT / Pants: Gap / Shoes: Nine West / Necklace: Forever 21

Paloma says...

A floral blouse to liven up an otherwise gray day.  And pants again. That is all.

Cool Colors

You know, Monday blues and all that.

Shirt: Express / Cardigan: The Limited / Skirt: J.Crew Factory / Shoes: Nine West

Paloma says...

Feeling a bit more sharp than I did last week, particularly all buttoned up in a blouse and cardigan. Been loving this blouse that I had buried in the back of my closet for years, only to rediscover it in the course of blogging.  Love when that happens!

Dress: Joie / Jacket: Heavenly Couture / Shoes: J.Crew / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff / Pearls: Principessa Venice

Karen says...

I'm dressed like a Senator's wife today!  Such is the look of a patterned, fitted dress, a string of pearls, and a leather tote.  The dress is from another warehouse sample sale for Joie/Current Elliot (a magical combination), and the bag is from Nordstrom's weekend sale where most designer handbags were 20% off.  Listen to me, I sound like a retail nut job.  The truth hurts.

Friday and Other Trivialities

Just cannot say enough about how great it is to see each other for lunch and a photo!

Dress: Theory / Jacket: Theory / Shoes: Zara / Bag: Mulberry

Karen says...

Oh, why, why, why must all my court appearances happen on casual Fridays?  I was a few minutes late running out the door this morning because I had to pack my "after court/work" casual outfit, so much can I not stand the thought of going all day in a lady monkey suit.  These are separates, obviously, as you can see from the slightly off shades.  Once upon a time, I was rather petite girl who only wore Theory.  These days, I am a normal-sized girl who sometimes squeezes into old Theory separates.  Theory pieces are amazing - that stand the test of time, as long as they still fit.

Love getting to see Paloma!  Adore seeing her in the Beirut t-shirt!

Cardigan: J.Crew / Shirt: Beirut concert tee from Karen / Jeans: LOFT / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini
Earrings: bridesmaid gift

Paloma says...

Sporting a birthday gift from my beloved Karen today!  She got me this t-shirt for a band I adore called Beirut after she went to their show.  The lead singer is from my hometown of Santa Fe, and before they made it big, the band used to play at functions for my husband's theatre company out of Albuquerque.  Anyway, Karen was so sweet to get me this shirt, to compensate for the fact that I am not exactly in the concert-going phase of my life these days. :)

I have worn this shirt a few times on the weekends since she gave it to me, but this is the first time I've gotten to dress it up for work a bit - slap on some heels and a cardigan and call it Casual Friday!

Reliable Standbys

Making some beloved favorite pieces work today.

Cardigan: H&M / Shirt: Target / Skirt: LOFT / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini

Paloma says...

Well, I'll be damned!  Believe it or not, today I decided to wear not one, but two items from my 30 for 30!  I thought that I wouldn't want to touch these clothes with a ten-foot pole after wearing them nonstop for a month, but it turns out I chose items I really like!  Plus, this is a combination I never wore during those 30 days.  (Trust me, I checked.)

Dress: Stussy / Necklace: Topshop / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell / Bag: Mulberry

Karen says...

I felt half alive when this photo was taken (but love to my friend Janet who obliged like it was the most normal thing in the world).  I'm just grateful it's passable.  I love this little dress that is best paired with some tights for fall; the 80-degree weather of late has made me skip that step.  The pearl schoolgirl collar necklace is not as visible here, but I thought it was a nice touch.

The Schizophrenic Season

It's 88 degrees outside.  In November.  Whatever.

Shirt: Maison Scotch / Vest: Zara / Skirt: Marc by Marc Jacobs / Socks: Club Monaco / Boots: Zara

Karen says...

Very much liking the socks and ankle boots thing and will be doing it all... winter... long.  Not that we even know what autumn and winter around here look like, with this high-80's weather crap.

This outfit is worky, or schoolgirly, or casual, not really sure what.  But safe to say it's a bunch of preppy basics thrown together.  And the skirt isn't really this short, I swear.

Shirt: Old Navy / Skirt: J.Crew Factory / Shoes: Jessica Simpson / Necklace: Target

Paloma says...

Another day another comfortable outfit that makes me feel "meh."

After a stressful last month, with the accompanying bad habits of less sleep, less exercise, and eating poorly, I can't really be faulted for just wanting to wear sweatpants every day, right?  Once again, attempting to get as close to sweatpants as I can in my workwear - a stretchy cotton skirt and blousy top. Also, a side note: Its 90 degrees out today (wtf?) but my office is 34 degrees with A/C blasting.  Thus, I really feel like I should be wearing a cozy sweater and some pants.

Comfy Means Productive

Business as usual, fashion creativity suffering a bit as we continue to be busy working bees.

Sweater: Banana Republic / Shirt: The Limited / Pants: The Limited / Shoes: Nine West / Earrings: Mod Cloth

Paloma says...

So, after falling off the blog wagon for the last two days, I'm back in the office and in my finest work wear! OK... so, this definitely doesn't qualify as my "finest," but it's not sweatpants and slippers so it counts.

As fall descends upon us (though you wouldn't know it - temperatures sway from 60 to 90 on a daily basis), I find myself reaching for pants more frequently.  This morning I pulled these out and was thrilled because I had seriously forgotten that I had gray "exact stretch" pants (the best budget work pants, in my humble opinion - sturdy, cute, comfortable).  I threw on this little basic ensemble and went about my day only to realize shortly thereafter that these are my post-pregnancy pants and thus 2 sizes larger than I usually wear.  No wonder I look like I'm wearing a sack of potatoes! Guess I need to buy more!

Sweatshirt: Stateside / Skirt: The Limited / Shoes: Michael Kors / Necklace: H&M

Karen says...

More shots from the single girl's lair.  I actually did not intend to wear this sweatshirt at work all day - but I did.  I had on a purple cami underneath, topped with a cream boucle jacket - but it was oh-so-luxurious to work peacefully in my office in this comfy sweatshirt.  To that defense, the sweatshirt is kind of a fancy fitted one from Ron Herman.  My co-worker Vi commented on that, "you could tell," she said, that it wasn't a standard schlubby one.

On that note, I do love the look of a casual sweatshirt or tee with a fancy necklace and jeans.  I like to think that this is along those lines, but as a low-key work look.

Bad Bloggers

Super busy, and missing days in uncharacteristic fashion (pun intended).  As today was a holiday, we were able to work from home and/or go casual.  So, here's the casual side of things.

T-shirt: the lady & the sailor / Skirt: Madewell / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Karen says...

Ah, Monday.  The return to work stress and all things not exactly fashionable.  Still, it helps when it's Veteran's Day and the office gives you another casual day.  These are a couple of my current faves, that I can't get enough of and randomly match well together.  Can't say enough about this awesome burgundy t-shirt, which reminds me of colors I loved back in seventh grade.

Made a quick stop at Nordstrom after work because I'm hunting down the new Tory Burch fragrance.  Apparently, it is exclusive to Bloomingdale's at least through the holidays.  So, on to other things of amusement, and that's how I found myself here in this dressing room.  A great place for selfies!

The Tall and the Short of It

Fun with new apps today!  And pretty necklaces and dresses.

Dress: J.Crew / Sweater: J.Crew / Neckace: Forever 21 / Shoes: Target

This dress is everything.  It's so darn cute, comfortable, flattering, etc.  But.  Methinks it's too short for work.  :-(  Damn the plight of the tall girl.  On a related note, my mom (who is 5'11") told me when I was a teenager that our fashion burden as tall women (I'm only 5'8", but still) is that we can't wear super flashy outfits because big flashy outfits look too big and too flashy on a taller woman, which is a larger canvas, so to speak.

Anyway, I had black pumps on with this, but somehow while strolling around the office this morning I felt too... inappropriate.  Like I was dressed for da clubz instead of for sitting at my computer drafting responses to interrogatories.  So I switched to the flats I stash under my desk and suddenly feel a lot more respectable. And short.

Dress: Cotton + Candy / Tights: HUE / Jacket: Zara / Boots: Zara / Necklace: The Limited

Let me share with you the plight of the short girl.  No matter how skinny you are, no matter how high a heel you're wearing, you always feel like a chubby troll.  Am I exaggerating?  Yes, but not much.

Thus, the short girl loves short, flouncy dresses, and loves wearing it with a high, stacked heel.  My dream look - as I've shared with Paloma many times - is to have a tiny body with a huge head of hair and high, clunky shoes.  But, like fabulous platforms, not stripper things.  It sounds silly, but I think she gets it.

If only Paloma and I could switch for a day.  I would love to feel effortlessly glamorous in an understated tall girl look, a la Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.  ("What would CBK do?")  And I'm sure Paloma would have fun running around with big hair and loud jewelry, like a tiny Dolly Parton.

In the meanwhile, we know our looks, and we're stickin' to 'em.

Patterns Are The New Neutral

Similar color schemes... again!  Going with blue and patterns today.

Top: American Apparel / Skirt: American Apparel / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini

Karen says...

Boy, am I not in a picture-taking mood lately.  When you've been squinting at a screen all day, or talking your head off in a closed office, it's not like you feel anything close to camera-friendly.  I think the lighting in this photo screams "end of the day."

Just a coincidence, but an obvious one, that both of these items are American Apparel.  There's something about their 80's-throwback hipster gear where... it only matches with each other.  Like, what else will you match with a pair of high-waisted stonewashed jeans, but the floral spandex crop top next to it at the store?  I matched this new skirt with a number of "normal" things this morning and the look didn't go.  I really wanted to make this skirt work, something between midi- and ankle-length.  Still not sure about it, but I pat myself on the back for taking a risk and going through with it.  One thing's for certain, I love this skirt's pockets.

Shirt: James Perse / Cardigan: J.Crew / Skirt: Merona for Target / Necklace: gift / Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Paloma says...

I'm not sure where I saw this color combination (probably Pinterest, let's be honest), but I love it.  I considered wearing my cobalt blue pencil skirt, but instead chose the navy one because ultimately it felt more "autumn."  This is that emergency Target purchase skirt from a few weeks ago, and I am so glad I got it.  Can't believe I have gone so long without a navy skirt, actually.  Also, these Merona pencil skirts at Target are really pretty awesome, especially for the cost!  They seem to keep coming out with more cute patterns and colors, too.  I really want this paisley/stripe one, but have to track it down at my local Target since it's sold out online...

Happy Hump Day!

Memo Said Pink

Finally, a bit of normalcy as we're able to meet up and do like we used to.

Cardigan: Martin + Osa (RIP) / Shirt: J.Crew / Skirt: The Limited / Shoes: Nine West / Earrings: gift

Paloma says...

There is truly nothing better than getting a long-overdue lunch with my partner in blogging crime.  So refreshing.  And of course, with matching color schemes, we are somehow always in sync.  Guess that's what happens after almost a year of carefully cataloging your outfits together.

So I have never been much of a button-down shirt kind of gal, but recently I realized that I think I was just buying the wrong ones.  Turns out, the softer and/or billowier the better.  I recently bought two of the Portofino shirts from Express, and I just adore them.  And today's shirt (a birthday gift from my always fashionable mom) is another winner.  Soft, relaxed, and no iron necessary.  Would look just as cute untucked over boyfriend jeans as it does tucked into a pencil skirt.  A girl could get used to this.

Shirt: Anthropologie / Pants: J.Crew Super 120s / Shoes: Steve Madden / Bag: Mulberry

Karen says...

Had a sweater on over all of this for a hearing this morning.  The rest of the day warmed up, so by lunch time it was perfect to just walk around in a sleeveless chambray.  And then on to a lovely lunch with the Ever Fabulous Paloma.

And it delights me to see us wearing something similar.  We realized the whole color scheme was sort of the same.  I can't even remember why I picked pink for my shoes other than sheer instinct.

This is the first day in a long time that I have felt sane or normal during the workday, and it had everything to do with getting to see Paloma and doing our usual routine.  Happy days!

Just Another Manic Monday

Like, seriously manic.  For Karen, at least.

Top: Joie / Jacket: Heavenly Couture / Pants: Trouve / Boots: Frye

Karen says...

In due time, every square inch of this apartment will somehow be photographed with me and my outfits.  I mean, there can only be so much room, right?  So, I am backlogged one outfit (Friday's) - the last week has just been a whirlwind of work activity and I just have no idea how we ever were able to blog all... year... long.  It has almost been an entire year of work outfits!  Now that just two months are left, I am surprised that we have kept at it faithfully, for so long.

I'm smiling in this photo, but it's all very fake.  I had changed out of this outfit once I got home to watch the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.  And then changed back into it.  But yes, indeed, I wore this all day and to meeting with clients.  Keepin' it real.

Sweater: J.Crew / Pants: Express / Shoes: Target / Necklace: J.Crew

Paloma says....

So after a seriously nutty week last week, I am very excited to have a normal not super busy week ahead.  I mean, as normal and "not super busy" as you get with a demanding job and two kids.

Anyway, to celebrate the joy of a relatively mellow week, I busted out my favorite bright pink sweater (oh, Tippi, I cannot say it enough - I love you), and some comfy straight-leg pants.  And of course, the ubiquitous nude patent pumps.  Since its cloudy and rainy today, pants were definitely in order. I don't think I've worn these in months but I'm happy to see them again!

Friday, November 1, 2013

Finally Friday

Feels like its been a really long couple of weeks for these working gals.  We are trudging through, however. And now, its November, and hopefully the start of a less busy holiday season.

Sweater: Old Navy / Shirt: Urban Outfitters / Pants: Target / Shoes: J.Crew

Paloma says....

Err.... this outfit was a lot cuter in my imagination. I don't like how it photographs and this picture reminded me why I rarely wear flats - frump-a-dump.  Anyway, its comfortable, and since its Friday and I am exhausted from a crazy week, it will do just fine.

Karen says...

Something soon.  I remember what I wore on this day.  I just have to recreate it.  I liked it, too.

Working Girl's Halloween

Halloween for lawyers just means "Casual Day."  Wheee!

T-shirt: Target / Sweater: Forever 21 / Skirt: Club Monaco / Tights: J.Crew / Boots: DV Dolce Vita

Karen says...

I love Halloween, and it has so much potential, but my only concern was finding this jack-o-lantern tee and wearing it with a skirt and some tights.  Et voila.  The rest of the components made the outfit feel like fall, with a dark twist.  I had a meeting with some other attorneys today, but apparently everyone thinks Halloween is Casual Day, so it all worked out.

Sweater: Target / Shirt: J.Crew / Jeans: LOFT / Necklace: Forever 21 / Shoes: Sole Society

Paloma says....

My (very stupid) running joke all day on Halloween was "I dressed as Casual Friday for Halloween!"  But seriously, I am a bit of an anti-Halloween gal, except that I get into it for my kids. Me dressing up? Absolutely not, no thank you. I think this comes from working as a bartender for too long  in my early 20s - you start to hate these 'drinking' holidays, and all that comes with them.

Anyway, I did give an ever so slight nod to the holiday, with an orange(ish) sweater and black shoes. But that's about as celebratory as it gets around here! Boo Humbug.
